A little colour for your next make

Plan a balanced beadable pen with one focal shape, a simple palette and compatible components.

A focal bead gives a small project its personality. A daisy can feel soft and cheerful; a little bee can bring warmth to a neutral palette. Start with one shape you love and let the other components support it.

Pick a small palette

Choose a main colour and one or two supporting shades. Cream, sage and honey make a gentle garden-inspired combination. Blush and cream feel soft, while a single warm accent can bring a quieter design to life.

Lay it out before assembling

Place your focal bead and spacer beads in the order you’re considering. Leave a little visual breathing room around the focal shape. Try turning the arrangement around or swapping one colour before you commit.

Check the fit

Bead holes, shapes and sizes vary. Check that your beads are compatible with your chosen pen blank, and that the complete arrangement fits its available space. Follow the pen blank manufacturer’s assembly instructions; don’t force a component that doesn’t fit.

Focal beads are decorative craft components, not a complete pen kit. Check each listing for the quantity supplied and any components you need separately.

Finish with care

After assembly, check that every fastening is secure and that the pen works as intended. Keep loose beads and small parts away from young children. These projects should not be treated as toys or teething products.

A simple, well-balanced combination can be just as lovely as a complicated one.
